006 - The Middle Wave
This episode finds Brett & Carson discussing the healing potential of earthing, while Brett recaps his experience with The Presence Process. The duo wraps up the episode working through a visual theory of equinimity based on a sine wave. Other topics include visits from Jehovah's Witnesses and skateboarder Rodney Mullen. \m/

RE: 006 - The Middle Wave
Hey Guys!

So did the earthing kit thingie work -- reduce inflammation and that sort of thing?

I haven't made it all the way through the podcast yet, but I did see the documentary you were talking about. The science was kind of unsatisfying for me. Remember there was a segment about this girl running barefoot through Nebraska in the summer? The ground wasn't conductive enough, so they had her put her feet on the corn stalk? Right there, that blew their hypothesis, that being connected to the earth somehow "grounds" you, right out of the water. The ground in Alaska is cold and wet -- both properties that are conductive. I'd bet money that you don't realize the same benefits from walking barefoot in the Sahara that you get from walking barefoot in Alaska.

So looking at that, I'd want to first prove that humans carry an electrical charge. Then I'd want to prove that the charge could be reduced. Next I'd want to prove that an increased electrical charge causes the body to malfunction (inflammation seems like a good culprit), and finally, I'd want to prove that relieving the body of its charge reduces inflammation. If all of this is true, I think the grounding kits could work really well. But would I get the same benefit from an ice pack?

So anyway, I thought the notion was really intriguing, but the science was sloppy.

So did it work? :-) I'm ready to spend money on a kit because I think it could work -- but not for the reasons they give in the documentary.

P.S. There's a spot in my back that's hurt for well over a decade, and I'm sure it's soft tissue damage that gets inflamed. I go barefoot all the time, but I still hurt.

P.P.S. This is something that science can't currently address, but isn't it possible that all those people got better simply because they wanted to? Are there any cases where grounding doesn't work?

RE: 006 - The Middle Wave
Hi Whippoorwill,

Yes, I agree that the science was lacking in the documentary. Personally though, I'm at a point where I only trust personal experience, and often not even that as everything experienced is subjective. Biggrin That said, I've been using Earthing patches nearly every night while I sleep for several months now. Here are my observations:

-Where I put the patch on my body flavors the experience... sometimes extremely. I can no longer put the patch on my elbow as it will have me squirming in uncomfort within a minute and I can't last more than 5 with it on. It's very hard to explain what is uncomfortable because the uncomfort doesn't seem to be (for me) on a physical level. When I put the patch on the sole of my foot I don't have this uncomfortable experience. I'm not sure if it is a reaction with the implant or what, but it wasn't like that for the first month... not sure if I became more sensitive in that time, but that would not be a stretch.

-I sleep less but wake up feeling more rested when using the patch. On the times when I have forgotten to put the patch on I find that I sleep deeper, but that the sleep is not as restful. I wake up more tired and always sleep right to the alarm. With the patch on I often wake up before the alarm and I almost always feel well rested, even if I only get 3-4 hours of sleep (which is often). Tongue

-There is a possibility that using the patch is causing the extra bone growth that is occurring in my elbow at this time. I saw the specialist for xrays last week and we found that there is bone growing all over the place... covering the whole implant, growing in the middle of the bicep, on the edges of the upper arm bone (which was never injured), all over the place. Eventually the bone will stop growing (supposedly) and then they will be going in surgically to remove it. I don't know for sure that putting the patch directly on the elbow for the first month caused this, but I have a suspicion that it at least contributed to it.

Love,
Carson metal

Wow, great observation! I totally did not pick that up when watching the documentary. Cheers

My experience with using the patches was that I felt a bit too grounded, and I stopped using them after about a week after experiencing low energy in my daily life. They also did not help with my snoring, but I do have a deviated septum. My girlfriend on the other hand has some back problems stemming from a car accident, and says that the patches greatly help in reducing inflammation and the overall pain she experiences throughout the day. Usage for both of us is/was at night while sleeping.

I experimented with them again yesterday in a different context, and had some interesting results. I was feeling imbalanced energetically (mostly in the upper body), and dealing with symptoms of being cranky, lack of concentration, and slight headache in crown. This is something I'm used to, and tends to show up following a day of heavy focus on a creative endeavor of some sort, although it is not exclusive to that. My solution is usually a mindless activity that requires no focus such as laying on the couch and watching tv. It doesn't necessarily alleviate the symptoms, but makes them much easier to deal with. I've found fighting them only makes it worse, and it usually takes a good night's sleep to rid myself of the imbalance entirely.

Carson and I have looked into these symptoms before and came to the conclusion that I likely have a blockage in the throat, leading to energy getting trapped in the upper system. So yesterday, while experiencing the symptoms, I placed a patch on the back of my neck, laid down in bed for ten minutes or so, and nothing changed. I was about to give up when I decided to take it a step further and placed the patch on the top of my head. I experienced an immediate drop in intensity, and after ten minutes felt pretty much back to normal and was able to continue my day.

I'm going to continue these experiments and will keep the thread (and podcast) updated as to my findings. If this was not a one-time thing and proves to be a viable method of displacing trapped energy, I will be one happy fucking camper. Party

RE: 006 - The Middle Wave
Your experiment Brett has spurred a desire here to experiment a bit too. I decided not to use the patch last night and actually slept pretty decent. Didn't feel tired when I woke up and I actually almost got up early (after only 4 hours of sleeping). I have plenty of energy today and feel well rested. Might do a month or so without it and then a month with it and see what differences I can notice.

On a side note, the extra bone growth mentioned in my post above was explained to my acupuncturist yesterday and she is fairly certain that our treatments have some correlation to it. She's now consulting with colleagues to see if they agree and/or have any new recommendations.

I'll be interested to see if not using the earthing patches makes any difference in how I respond to the weekly survey you send me whippoorwill. ;D

Oh yeah! Um… Would you mind making a note about that in the grounding section comments -- when you use the patch and when you don't?

Someday people are going to get the opportunity to accuse me of sloppy science too! :-D

RE: 006 - The Middle Wave
I'm back on the patch. Shock

After two nights without the patch, I woke up so exhausted that I barely made it through my day. I felt similar to how I did back when I was taking too much methadone. I used it again last night and feel like a million bucks today. I may test this a few more times but I just can't afford to be that tired these days... too much to do! Rock

RE: 006 - The Middle Wave
Well, this is interesting…

The earthing kit arrived on Tuesday, and I've been hooked in while working. (The outlets in my bedroom have an open ground, so I can't use it at night until I fix that. Shock)

I can't feel energy flowing around quite like you guys can -- at least not to the same extent -- but I did notice that the deep muscle tissue in my left shoulder and arm has relaxed quite a bit. (I wear the patch in various places on my left arm.) There's an obvious difference in the tension of the muscle in the forearm and deltoids, and there's an obvious difference in the range of motion in my left shoulder. The only drawback I can see is that my skin reacts to the adhesive on the patch, so I have these big blotches on my arm wherever the patch was. I hoped that moving it around would help prevent the rash, but apparently not.

Here's the weird part… There's a spot under the left shoulder blade that has hurt for at least 15 years -- maybe longer. Well that pain has started to fade, and I've found myself twisting, pressing, etc. to try to trigger the pain -- checking to see if it's still there. And I get a sense of relief when it hurts! Like, "oh yeah, it's still there. Thank goodness I'm alright." Shock The pain is so familiar that I feel "wrong" when it's gone. It's perfectly insane.
